This would be a theme/CSS setting indeed. If we offer this option then users will also want to have different presentations of the title. Other users do not want to show a slide title, but only a picture. Currently it works for import (if people import, the title in the slide is also imported and shown, regardless of the title in the decktree), so lets decide on this later when we get to themes.

Or, , is this a problem with the migrated decks? Then is it also a problem in slide view, edit, and thumbnails? In that case we should offer the same functionality as the old slidewiki.org. Migrated decks would have to be detected (perhaps absence of pptx2html div elements) and in each view we would have to add features to show title. This seems to increase complexity, so perhaps there is an easier solution.

Regarding import, perhaps we can let users select 2 options:

• use first text in slide (usually the actual title, but might also be unrelated)

• use title from Powerpoint template (might be missing (=we give "slide N" as title) and does not work with OpenOffice)

Or (I think this is better) we do this automated in steps:
1) detect slide title from Powerpoint template
2) if not detected -> use first text in slide (max 50 characters)
3) if no text in slide -> use generic title "slide N" (N = slide number)
For all: check for redundant titles (e.g. because of step 1) and 2) we might have redundancy) - to prevent that order is lost.

How do users define slide titles (if any) in OpenOffice?

I've had quite a bit of discussion about titles with the guys at VUA (see Confluence discussion. The issue we have is that if you import slides, the title is included within the slide content. So if we displayed the title from the decktree it was repeated. In addition, it content is imported that didn't use a layout (e.g. from LibreOffice) we can't detect what is the slide title.

If this request has come from users of migrated decks, I can understand that they are not see titles in their slides. But I don't think we should change the system for everyone. Perhaps this could be managed through a setting/theme to allow the user to specify if a title is displayed. Thoughts ?
